by Felipe Hueb
The work depicts a smoking woman “with her head in the clouds” – literally. It symbolizes her reflection. She thinks about something we cannot perceive. Through the pop culture and romanticization of a cigarette, smoking woman became femme fatale figure. The cigarette did not masculinize them, as some would think. On the contrary, it was a tool of emancipation. At the same time, while smoking, women emphasized their femininity. This is why the collage seems so rebellious and nevertheless delicate. By using soft, pastel, luxurious colors of purple and gold, the artist emphasized the femininity emanating from the painting. It evokes a feeling of peace and is extremely pleasing to the eye.
