by Jairo Guerrero
“The Beyond” is an extremely expressive, downright ravishing artwork. It is an artwork representing a character trying to literally break free from the fetters of hell or purgatory. The creature has human shapes, however, is not fully a human. Rather, an afterimage of what once was a human. Its mimicry and gestures indicate that it is suffering. Under the figure, there are other beings visible, scraps of bodies, skulls…
Looking at this painting, one gets an impression that the depicted figure is a piece of the soul, a human leftover capable of experiencing only negative emotions – pain, fear, suffering. For its creation, the author has used red paint, which symbolizes blood, torment (perhaps also the remnants of humanity) as well as white as a glow symbolizing death, which simultaneously dynamizes the painting. The artwork itself is a representation, as the title suggests, of the afterlife in a macabre version.
